American Identity

Before our reading and class discussion over “Letters from an American Farmer” and the selected poems, my definition and ideas of American identity were very surface level and narrow.  I thought to myself, “Being American is drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, setting off fireworks, going hunting, spending weekends on the lake and knowing you live in the greatest country in the world.”  But then, the reading and discussion really allowed me to have an open mind to what others believe being American is.  Being American is about what you can contribute to American society.  People from all over the world want to be a part of this country because they have seen the contributions of other immigrants turn into success stories.  Whether it is being in the military, starting a company and providing jobs, or simply living the “American Dream,” someone will consider that American.  I understand now that there are countless variations of how to define being American.  So in a way, my definition of American identity has been challenged.  I know that my version of American identity is not the only correct definition; it is just correct and applicable to me.  In conclusion, I wouldn’t say my definition of American identity has changed; I have just opened my mind to the fact that there many diverse definitions of American identity to choose from.
